Bindi Irwin and her partner Derek Hough wowed the judges and the audience on the “Dancing With The Stars” season 21 premiere. The duo danced their way to the top spot after nailing a dynamic jive to Elton John’s classic hit “Crocodile Rock,” ultimately tying for the highest score of the night. See video below.
Before hitting the dance floor, Irwin explained that she was performing in honor of her father, “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, who died suddenly in 2006. “Mom always says that any time dad would watch me dance around the zoo he would cry,” she said. “I think the real reason I am doing this is to make him proud and everyone back at home in Australia proud. I think that everyone back home in Australia is going to see a whole new side of Bindi.”
After the stellar routine, judge Carrie Ann Inaba told the 17-year-old animal activist, “You are a superstar!” She added that “if this was 30 years ago, I would want to be your best friend. Your energy is so contagious!” Always outspoken Bruno Tonioli was all smiles as he proclaimed Irwin “the wonder from down under.”
And judge Julianne Hough (Derek’s sister) could hardly contain her excitement over the performance, exclaiming that Irwin delivered “the best performance of the night.” The top-rated routine earned an 8 from each judge, for a total of 24 out of 30 possible points. Nick Carter and Sharna Burgess later tied that when they gave the final performance of the night.
Votes cast for the premiere routines will determine who is sent home next Monday. Check out video of Irwin and Hough’s performance below, and tell us what you think!
