The Martian is rocketing to an out-of-this-world opening.
The Ridley Scott movie, starring Matt Damon as an astronaut stranded on Mars, is on track to easily win the box office in its debut weekend. Estimates have the film pegged at bringing in $55 million, which would be the second-highest October opening of all time, just behind another space flick, Gravity. It’s possible, however, a late weekend surge will lead The Martian to break the $55.8 million record set two years ago.
Last weekend’s chart topper, Hotel Transylvania, is slipping from number one to number two, but with a highly respectable $31.7 million. There’s then a big drop to third place, though, with Sicario looking at just $11.8 million. The Intern will likely be right behind with $11.7 million to take the number four spot.
Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials is eyeing a fifth-place finish with a potential $7.3 million. Black Mass could take the number six spot if it has $5.8 million in box office receipts. Ticket sales of $5.3 million would put Everest in seventh.
The Top 10 will potentially be rounded out by The Visit ($3.9 million), War Room ($2.6 million), and The Perfect Guy ($2.3 million). All figures are currently estimates. TELL US: What are YOU seeing this weekend?
