Richard Simmons has broken his silence, insisting he is not being held hostage, despite a recent news story suggesting he was being held against his will. Watch below.
On Saturday, the New York Daily News published a lengthy feature in which friends of Simmons said that not only had he disappeared from the spotlight, but also not even they had seen him over the last two years. The pals raised the possibility that the fitness guru had been kidnapped, though a rep for Simmons refuted the speculation and said he was just enjoying some privacy after such a public life. Now the star himself is speaking out.
In a phone conversation with Savannah Guthrie that was broadcast on Monday’s “Today,” Simmons stated, “No one is holding me in my house as a hostage. I do what I want to do as I’ve always done. So people should sort of believe what I have to say.”
“That’s just very silly,” Simmons said of the allegation that his housekeeper is controlling him, noting she’s been working for him for 30 years. The workout expert went on to explain, “I just wanted to be sort of a loner for a little while… I’ve taught thousands of classes. Right now I just want to take care of me.”
Simmons said he uses his home gym, and even goes out for drives, even though he hasn’t been spotted in public in quite some time. “I just sort of enjoy this time by myself,” he insisted. To his fans, the star assured, “Not to worry. Richard’s fine. You haven’t seen the last of me. I’ll come back, and I’ll come back strong.” Check out the full interview below.
