The first trailer for the 2016 remake of Ben-Hur was released on Wednesday. Watch below!
The historical epic is a film adaptation of the 1880 novel Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ by Lew Wallace. The book is widely considered to be one of the most influential Christian offerings of all time, and sparked two previous movie versions. The most famous, of course, starred Charlton Heston in 1959 and won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
This latest interpretation features Jack Huston in the role of Prince Judah Ben-Hur, who is wrongly accused of treason by his childhood friend and adopted brother Messala (Toby Kebbell), a Roman army officer. Ben-Hur is stripped of his title, exiled from his family, and forced into slavery. He spends seven years at sea before returning home for both revenge and redemption.
Morgan Freeman, Nazanin Boniadi, Sofia Black D’Elia, and Moisés Arias also star. Rodrigo Santoro will portray Jesus, and was blessed by Pope Francis before production began. Filming took place in Rome early last year.
The first official photos from the film were unveiled on Monday, just two days before the preview’s premiere. Originally scheduled to come out this past February, Ben-Hur is now slated to hit theaters on August 12, 2016. Check out the trailer below!
