La’Porsha Renae made a strong case for why she should be the last “American Idol” on part one of the finale on Wednesday. Check out the videos below!
Renae headed into this final phase of competition with friendly opponent Trent Harmon. For the first of three performances, she sang “Battles.” The track is her potential winner’s single.
In the second round, Renae performed “A House Is Not A Home,” which was selected by Simon Fuller, the creator of “American Idol.” Jennifer Lopez told her afterward, “A lot of people have done that — now we have the La’Porsha version. So beautiful!”
Harry Connick, Jr. noted, “Melodically and harmonically, that was the most complex song you’ve done this season.” And between nailing it musically and lyrically, the judge added, “That’s about all you can ask for.” Keith Urban further called the performance “smoldering.”
For her third and final performance, Renae went with Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” which she sang to great success earlier in the season. Urban exclaimed after, “Crazy! Amazing!” The finalist then broke into tears as the crowd cheered for her.
Lopez told Renae, “I can’t wait to one day go to a show of yours.” And Connick said, “I have nothing to say about that performance. I thought that was incredible. I have nothing to say. It was amazing.” The inaugural “Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson even tweeted after the show, “I have never voted for anyone on @AmericanIdol not even 4 myself BUT I will be voting for @laporsharenae tonight. I need her future record!” Watch all the performances below!
