The Jungle Book was king of the box office jungle this weekend, swinging to a first place win with a $103.6 million opening. Disney’s latest telling of the classic Rudyard Kipling stories combines live action and CGI that’s winning acclaim from critics and moviegoers alike. Featuring the voices of Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson and Idris Elba, the star-studded movie easily trounced its competition.
Coming in a very distant second place was Barbershop: The Next Cut. It took in $20.2 million. Last week’s chart-topper, Melissa McCarthy’s The Boss, nabbed third place with $10.2 million in ticket sales. Batman V Superman, which crossed the $300 million mark in its fourth week, had a haul of $9 million for a fourth place finish. Meanwhile, Zootopia, the last animal movie to rule the box office, came in the number five spot with $8.2 million
Rounding out the Top 10 were the new thriller Criminal in sixth, with box office receipts of $5.9 million, while My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 secured seventh place with $3.3 million. Miracles From Heaven came in eighth with $1.9 million, and the other religion-based film, God’s Not Dead 2, landed in ninth with $1.7 million. Just making it into the Top 10 was Eye In The Sky, which earned $1.6 million.
