“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Breaks New Year’s Box Office Record


Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke the New Year’s box office record, and is on its way to becoming the top-grossing domestic movie of all time. On New Year’s Day Friday, The Force Awakens earned $34.5 million, easily toppling Avatar’s record of $25.3 million. For the Friday-Sunday period, the movie brought in $88.3 million. With that, the film’s total cumulative domestic gross is $740.3 million, meaning The Force Awakens should break Avatar’s all-time domestic record of $760.5 million early next week.

Daddy’s Home, the family comedy starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell, had another strong showing. For its second week, the flick had a holiday weekend haul of $29 million for second place. Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight took the number three spot with $16.2 million. And Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s Sisters and Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip snagged fourth and fifth places, with $12.6 million and $11.8 million, respectively.

Rounding out the Top 10 were Joy in sixth place with $10.4 million, while The Big Short secured the number seven spot with $9 million. Concussion came in eighth place with $8 million, and Point Break finished in ninth with $6.8 million. Just making it into the Top 10 was The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, which had ticket sales of $4.6 million.
